De Beers English Olympiad

The English Olympiad is an annual English competition that drew 8000 candidates from 380 national and international schools in 2016.

The theme was, “A journey into darkness: Excerpts from stories exploring the darker side of human nature”. The anthology was compiled by SACEE and consisted of excerpts and stories from narrative prose of the 19th and 21st Centuries, such as Frankenstein – Mary Shelley, Hop-Frog – Edgar Allen Poe, The Turn of the Screw – Henry James, Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad and This Book Betrays my Brother by Kagiso Lesego Molope.

Twenty eight Jeppe learners sat this year’s exam. Two of our girls were awarded gold certificates – Sasha- Lee Morare (grade 12) and Zahraa Akhalwaya (grade 11). Sasha-Lee who is pictured above was placed 12th in the Olympiad which is a wonderful achievement.

Three girls – Sukeina Issufo, Olea Khambula and Thirasha Waidyaratne – were awarded silver certificates.

Nine girls – Savannah Aysen, Ruth Furber, Firdous Hamid, Sinead Hovelmeier, Tasmiyah Laher, Tafadzwa Makhuza,Woniso Mazonde, Nicole Mychajluk and Jenna Orchard – were awarded bronze certificates.

Aarifah Alli, Samantha Correia, Raquel de Oliveira, Vaisshnavi Harrichund, Zainub Karodia, Donna- May Lamb, Tatiana Lourenco, Rethabile Maboko, Katlego Matshwane, Refilwe Mdluli, Kimberley Mugadza, Tymeka Naicker, Erin van Wyk and Noncebo Nene were awarded merit certificates.
