She graduated in 2005 and is now a Fixed Interest Analyst Dealer for Sanlam. She is passionate about empowering the youth through education , mentoring young people in her spare time.    Ayanda Nhlangothi (2002)

Ayanda Nhlangothi matriculated in 2002. In her final year of school, she qualified as an Idols finalist in the first Idols SA Competition. After leaving school, she appeared in the Joburg Civic Theatre pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, and then in the poet Lebo Mashile’s live recording. She then went to New York where she was involved in theatre and performed as a backing artist for Mango Groove. She is classically trained and composes her own music. In 2008, Ayanda released her debut album Music2me (Umngoma). The album is true to Ayanda’s roots and she had some assistance in the production from her musical family, the Nokwes (who have been referred to as the Jacksons of Africa). In Ayanda’s live performances, she has been likened to Dolly Rathebe and Mirriam Makeba. Ayanda has this to say of her album: “…when I did the album I was extremely confident with who I was. I no longer had a fear of whether I’ll be accepted by the industry or the public. I took time to do things differently and the intention was with the self in mind.” (Source: The Star, TonightWomen’s Day p 7 Wednesday August 6, 2008).

Lara Baker (2002)

I arrived at Jeppe High School for Girls, a shy and introverted teen, easily swayed by peer pressure. Being in an all-girls school, I became more confident to express who I was. I stopped hiding and began to shine, and by the time I was in grade 11, I had found sincere friends who allowed me to express my true self, without fear of criticism or embarrassment. I then started to excel: I got full colours for academics and was selected for provincial hockey and provincial water-polo. I also got provincial colours for karate (a sport I nearly quit for fear of ridicule!). In my matric year, I was elected house captain for Nerine, and first team hockey captain. I also became a prefect. I graduated from Jeppe Girls with 6 distinctions, and was accepted straight into medical school.

Now, 7 years later, I am a doctor completing my internship at a local hospital. I am a sensei in karate, and have my own dojo where I teach primary school children karate. I am engaged to a wonderful man. And I still get together regularly with my friends from Jeppe! (updated 2009)
