School Fees
Jeppe High School for Girls is a State-Aided public school and payment of school fees is compulsory. In State-Aided schools, the state pays the salaries of only some of the teachers and all other costs are paid for by the parents. The school has an academic staff of 46 of which only 29 are paid for by the state. The employment of additional staff by the Governing Body enables the school to keep classroom numbers manageable and maintain quality teaching.
Over the years, the parent body has consistently voted in support of the budgets that have been tabled. Furthermore, they have given the Governing Body a mandate to ensure that the culture of fee payment is maintained and, to take whatever action is necessary to collect fees. School fees for the coming year are set at the annual budget meeting which takes place in October. The annual increase has been between five and ten percent over the past ten years and is related to the cost of living index.
Many of the private schools offer full or partial scholarships which are awarded to the chosen learners for periods of time ranging from a year to five years. Such scholarships are usually conditional on the recipient’s maintaining the standard of excellence for which the scholarship was awarded. Jeppe High School for Girls has introduced a limited number of scholarships for Grade 8 and Grade 9.
It is expected that parents and guardians will pay school fees in full. Limited bursaries are available for those in straightened circumstances. Parents and guardians should be aware that state schools give preference to bursary applications from learners who are attending the state school closest to their home. Bursary application forms are available for collection from the school bursar’s office at the beginning of the school year and must be submitted before the end of January.
School fees for the 2010 school year are R15 500.00. Fees may be paid over 10 months, termly or up-front for the year. Parents or guardians who pay school fees up-front before 5 March 2010 receive a R1500.00 discount and those who pay in full before 31 March receive a R750.00 discount.
