Debating

Debating has a proud history at Jeppe. The Jeppe pupils have maintained the tradition of a well-researched and rehearsed argument.

The debating format has been altered this year. We now have two senior teams participating in competitive leagues- the matric team which competes in the SACEE league and the SAASTA team.

The SACEE (South African Council of English Education) Debating League is the largest league in the country. It tackles intriguing current affairs. The Jeppe team has won 2 out of 3 debates in this league to date and look forward to the next round which begins in May.

The SAASTA team participates in scientific debates. The selection of the SAASTA teams was based on an essay they submitted shortly before the November examinations in 2012. The team is currently preparing for its first provincial debate with the assistance of Mrs Newell (HOD SCIENCE) and a  debating coach.

In the third term, the Inter-house debating competition is held, and both Junior and Senior teams participate in formal debates, while house members provide support during the floor debate. Debating is an activity that involves many pupils, as main speakers or as part of the floor. Friendly debates against other schools give Junior or less experienced debaters the opportunity of learning the art of debating. This is an activity that operates on a provincial and a national level and many Jeppe debaters progress to debating at University level.
