Debating has a proud history at Jeppe. The Jeppe pupils have maintained the tradition of a well-researched and rehearsed argument. The senior debaters participate in the South African Council of English Education (SACEE) Debating League. This is the largest league in the country.
The Grade 11 Debaters compete in the Model United Nations Debating Competition which is organised by the South African Institute of International Affairs. This type of debating requires the team to represent a specific country at a mock Security Council debate on a hypothetical issue. The Grade 10 debaters assist with the detailed research required.

In the third term, the Inter-house debating competition is held, and both Junior and Senior teams participate in formal debates, while house members provide support during the floor debate. Debating is an activity that involves many pupils, as main speakers or as part of the floor. Friendly debates against other schools give Junior or less experienced debaters the opportunity of learning the art of debating. This is an activity that operates on a provincial and a national level and many Jeppe debaters progress to debating at University level.
