Individual Achievers 2008
Karate
Cheri-Lee Ribeiro was selected to represent All Styles Karate South Africa at the WKC (World Karate Confederation) World Cup for Juniors Championships held in Slovenia in October 2008. Cheri-Lee attended the Southern Gauteng Karate Provincial Tournament on 26 July and was awarded a silver medal for kata and a gold medal for fighting.
World Age Group Gymnastics Competition
Kelly-Lee Hawker (9E) was chosen to represent South Africa at the World Age Group Gymnastics Competition in Glasgow Scotland from 1 – 5 October 2008.
Soccer
Saskia Koster (Grade 9) plays for the Old Benonians Soccer Club. Their U15 team was invited to play in the Aberdeen International Football Festival (AIFF) a tournament against two Scottish clubs, Aberdeen United, Devernvale and Regensburg, a club from Germany. Saskia was vice-captain of the Old Benonians squad. The girls went to Scotland on the 9th of July and were there for two weeks. Saskia was mentioned in the local newspaper in Scotland which gave coverage to their first match in Seaton Park against Aberdeen United. It was a closely contested match which was in deadlock for most of the game until “Saskia Koster curled a delightful free kick into the top corner from 20 yards.” Old Benonians came third over all in the tournament, but returned home with two cups – one for 5 a side soccer and the other for obstacle courses.
Nicole Irwin
Nicole Irwin was the star player and captain of the Jeppe Girls First Soccer Team in 2008. She was the vice captain for the Eastern-Gauteng football squad, which won the Gauteng Inter-Provincial Tournament in July. Nicole also plays in the Luso Football Club which has been promoted to the Vodacom League – the highest league for women’s soccer in South Africa. Nicole won the Top Sportswoman of the District Award at the GDE D9 District School Enrichment Awards Ceremony in September.
Golf
Jenna Schonfeld finished 2nd in the U18 Rosebowl held at Schoeman Park. She lost an exciting sudden death playoff to Michelle Leigh. She gave another solid performance in the U18 section of the Girls Championship held at Orkney Golf Club, finishing in 3rd place. Jenna Schonfeld was chosen to represent Gauteng for the South African Inter Provincial Golf Tournament played at Ballito in Natal from 14 – 19 September 2008.!

Swimming-Ex Jeppe girl takes silver medal for Britain at the Olympics
Kerri-Anne Payne, who attended Jeppe High School for Girls in 2001, claimed a silver medal for Britain in the open water event at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Kerri-Anne was beaten by a mere one and a half seconds by Russian world champion Larisa Ilchenko .South Africa’s Natalie du Toit came 16th in the grueling 10 000 m race.
Kerri-Anne attended Jeppe High School for Girls in Grade 8, where she joined her sister, Janine. Both girls were excellent swimmers and Janine who was awarded full colors for swimming in 2000 still holds the school records for Junior Breaststroke (1998), Junior Backstroke (1998), Senior Freestyle (2000) and Senior Breaststroke (2000). Kerri-Anne still holds the records for Junior Freestyle (2001) and All Grades Butterfly (2001). The Payne family left South Africa for Britain to enable Kerri-Anne to pursue her swimming career in open water. Kerri-Anne won the women’s title for the Midmar Mile in 2004 (where she broke the record) and in 2005.

Mooniq Shaikjee – a young writer in the making
“It has always been my dream to be a published author. From an early age, I knew that there was much enjoyment to be found from a book, and later on I realized just how much impact the written word could have on people. I was also drawn to writing by the delicious thrill that one feels at the sight of one’s ideas in print between the covers of a book. Mooniq’s children’s story, “Cheetah’s tears” was one of the stories published in “African Road – New writing from Southern Africa 2006”.
Mooniq’s short story was published when she was a Grade 12 learner at Jeppe Girls.
Wakeboarding
Gina Faccio, won the SA Junior Wakeboarding Championships for the fourth consecutive year in a row and was selected to represent South Africa in the Wakeboarding team competing in Qatar in October 2007 while she was in her matric year at Jeppe High School for Girls.
Rowing
Tarryn Wright was chosen to represent South Africa at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Beijing, China in 2007. She was one of 11 young South Africans who representing their country over two weeks in July /August in China.
Golf
Jenna Schonfeld has been playing golf for four years and currently has a handicap of 4. She plays for Glendower Ladies and has been chosen to represent Gauteng at the interprovincial golfing championships in Clovelly , Cape Town in the first week of September. Jenna is 16 years old and is a Grade 11 pupil at Jeppe Girls.
Orienteering
Sarah Pope was chosen to represent South Africa at the World Orienteering championships in Sweden when she was a Grade 9 learner at Jeppe High School for Girls. The South African team was one of the 120 countries competing in the championships in different age groups.
Radio 2000 – Profile of a radio announcer
Lisa Mahoya jumped at the opportunity of presenting a show on radio while she was a Grade 11 learner at Jeppe Girls. She co-hosts the Radio 2000 Saturday morning show from 0900 to 1200 with another presenter. The show targets mainly teens, playing music, reviewing CDs and movies and providing guides for teens on specific issues. The highlight of the show as far as Lisa is concerned is the 11:00 to 12:00 slot where two teams of teenagers debate important issues. Lisa has been off air for a while, but will be returning to the radio station shortly.
